An important part of the slow, ethical and sustainable fashion conversation which is not often discussed is supporting British brands. Supporting local clothing design and production influences both the environmental impact of the clothing and supports the local economy.
This creates job opportunities for local people who want to start their own clothing company something that I feel very passionate about. In the grip of recession, inflation and crushing taxes Britain doesn't currently feel like the most entrepreneurial environment right now. However, there are still people with creativity, ideas and passion starting businesses and launching new projects despite the current economic outlook.
Supporting local businesses and companies that are creating jobs by keeping production in Britain is something that is good for the environment as well as good for people. It also allows for more transparency in how the garments are produced and ensures that they were done so ethically.
As I love to write about traditional English country clothing I thought I would compile a list of my favorite country clothing brands that still manufacture here in Britain. Choosing classic well made clothing is the best way to build a timeless sustainable wardrobe and all of these brands have some stunning potential additions to anyone's wardrobe:
Guinea is an amazing brand that focuses on glamorous timeless garments that are high quality and well made. The core collection is made from pure new wools traditionally woven from Yorkshire cloth mills or silk spun using 5000 year old techniques. They personally visit every factory before production starts to ensure that they produce high quality clothing that lasts.
Based and founded in the English countryside, Hicks & Brown have a passion for British heritage and style. They are designed and crafted in Britain and use only the highest quality wool to make their stunning fedoras.
Founded in 1948 in Somerset Owen Barry have been producing sheepskin and leather products for over 70 years. They are a family owned ethically run business and have a 'Philosophy of British heritage and manufacturing.
"We believe its important to keep these traditional handcrafting skills flourishing in Britain today".
Born in Shropshire so you can tell they area favorite of mine, Mackenzie & George are perpetually inspired by traditional British Countryside and style. They still manufacture in Britain and use vegetable tanned leathers and solid brass fittings to ensure that their products are timeless and sustainable.
British made Cowhide bags and accessories
Made and designed in the Cotswolds from 2010 Hicks and Hides manufacture stunning classic leather goods in Britain.
One of my personal favorite knitwear companies they made all their knits here in the UK. They are a small family run business and are 100% transparent about their business practices. Peregrine have recently started a regenerative wool campaign which I love.
One of the few luxury leather brands to make their own bags still here in England Tusting make classic timeless high-quality bags for town and country. Made in a factory they own in Northamptonshire the tannery has been operational since 1875 and they have employees who have worked in their factories for generations .
11. Highland and Herringbone
Founded in July 2020, Highland & Herringbone Country was inspired by the stunning British countryside. They make all their products locally in the UK with their knitwear being manufactured a stones through from their head office in Leicestershire!
