If you are looking for somewhere to escape the post- lockdown crowds, I can think of nowhere better than Sculpture by the Lakes. An oasis of calm set in 26 beautiful acres of Dorset countryside. Sculpture by the lakes hosts a number of sculptures by Simon Gudgeon set in beautiful tranquil surroundings blending nature with his artwork; free to be enjoyed without the constraints of a gallery.
Simon Gudgeon is one of the UK's leading contemporary sculptors with many of his works of art capturing the beauty of nature. A personal favourite of mine was the fruit pictured above.
Visiting Sculpture by the lakes was a real treat after months of lockdown and it is clear to see that they have gone to some trouble to make sure you can have a safe visit.
Set in such a large area it is easy to have a stress free visit - bringing a picnic is optional as the café is open and offering a take away service.
It was wonderful to see such an interesting place and although I am not a modern art fan, Simons sculptures were beautiful enough for me to appreciate and I love the way they did not sit apart from nature many of them interacted with their surroundings.
You have to love fruit that looks this good.
One thing I loved about Sculpture by the Lakes was also the little private nooks and cranny's that were dotted throughout the park. If you are looking for somewhere to host a party or small get together some of the venues were stunning. Some of their venues can host up to 100 people making it a wonderful place to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family. Personally I think the River Keepers Hut looks like the perfect place for a lunch in the sunshine with your family. You can even order picnic baskets to be taken with you!
I will be returning to Sculpture by the lakes on day soon, to eat in the café and relax by the water; it really is a true gem nestled in the heart of Dorset that you cant afford to miss!
