Which Beauty Companies Test On Animals?

If you are already reading this I suspect you already know how horrible and unnecessary animal testing is. But what companies test on animals? And how do you know if a product has been created through torture?
Well a good way to know if something has been tested on animals is if it does not have a leaping bunny certified logo on the back. Also, if it doesn't say that they are against animal testing on the packet/website then you can be quite confident that they could be involved in testing on animals.
However, even some products that are certified their parent companies still test (click here to read more) so all in all.... this can be a bit of a mine field. Furthermore, many companies claim to be cruelty-free unless required to test by law... which also means they support testing.
Truth be told it is hard to know if a beauty product has been tested on animals, but if you need a good list of companies who don't you can find them here. As a good rule of thumb however there are a few culprits who are some of the worst offenders, that I personally stay away from all together.
Some of the worst companies out there for animals testing that I never buy from are L'Oreal Maybelline, MAC, Benefit, NARS, Dove, Herbal Essences...basically anything made or owned by Uniliver is not cruelty free.
Some other brands that are quite surprising to learn are not cruelty-free are Smashbox, Simple, By Terry, Clarins, O.P.I. SEPHORA and Kiehls are all also not cruelty-free.
Half a million animals are blinded and killed each year for cosmetics, while over 500,000 are tested on and held in labs. And the worst part of it all is, there are other new ways of testing cosmetics and medicine that is more predictive than using animals as subjects. Some places like China still demand that all products be tested on animals, which I feel is barbaric - even if the companies are already selling their cosmetics in the West where our health and safety is much higher.
The good news in that there are so many great cruelty-free ethical beauty brands and dupes out there that we don't need to buy from ones who test at all. Companies like E.L.F. and bellapierre sell lovely cost effective cruelty free products.
Let me know if you have gone cruelty-free and what brands you love to use bellow x
