The campaign of second hand September was set up by Oxfam and promoted to highlight the negative impacts of the fashion industry. Fast fashion is extremely polluting to the environment and 93% of fashion brands don’t pay their workers a living wage.
Second hand September aims at highlighting the issues around the fashion industry, while also encouraging customers to use second hand shopping as an alternative.
Harriet Hernando, PR officer at Oxfam said "You are supporting helping to create a better fairer and greener future for everyone".
Everyone who reads my blog knows how much I love shopping second hand and I have many happy memories of traveling antique shops with my dad as a child.
Now 20 years on I still love a bargain and a good car boot sale wherever I can find one. Second hand September for me is a brilliant way of introducing people who may not consider buying from charity shops or vintage haunts a boost of encouragement.
Shopping second hand still has a stigma attached and I love how campaigns like this one can help break this down. In a strange sense I feel that some still feel that shopping second hand says something about their character, image or value as a person.
As I mainly buy secondhand anyway I will be using this month to produce more content around second hand fashion this month; so if this interests you please follow me on blog loving or Instagram to keep in touch 😊
