Top Sustainable Outdoor Clothing Brands

For those who love the outdoors, finding good sustainable outdoor clothing brands can be hard. Outdoor clothing can often be regarded as ‘slow fashion’ as good quality clothing can last for decades. However, for those of us who love nature and want to support ethical supply chains choosing outdoor companies that embody these values can be tricky. So here is my list of sustainable outdoor clothing brands who I would recommend.

1. Patagonia

Obviously his has to be number one. Patagonia is one of the top sustainable outdoor brands in the world and they have also become very iconic. They use organic non-GMO and natural fibers where possible or recycled polyester and nylon. They are also very careful with the dyes and are fair trade certified.

Patagonia is one of those sustainable outdoor brands that go that little bit further. Aside from choosing environmentally friendly materials they are also fair trade certified and have a transparent supply chain.

2. ACAI

Based out of their HQ in North Wales ACAI make outdoor clothing specifically for women. They aim to be as sustainable as possible using mesh laundry bags instead of traditional plastic packaging and environmentally concious materials. These include merino wool and recylced coffee beans which are used to make their base layers. They also use a fabric called polylana which is made using 70% recycled fabric which reduced the water consumption in production by 85%.ACAI pledges to offer innovation and style without compromising on comfort or performance with outdoor clothing made specifically for women.

3. Picture Organic

Picture Organic are a fairly new brand to me, but make some of the best and most functional outdoor clothing I have found. They use almost 100% recycled fiber technology and are a certified B corporation. They are also a member of the Fair Wear Foundation and donate from each sales to the WWF.

4. Tentree

Ten tree are brilliant for cosy slightly ourdoorsey clothing. They make their clothes from almost entirely sustainable fabrics and are a certified B corporation. Tentree also plant 10 trees in an area of damaged biodiversity for every item bought; currently making up 30,000,000 trees in 8 countries to help restore the land and natural bio-diversity.

5.Kuhl

Ultradurable but still not compleatly sustainable, they source recycled materials where possible. They are Fair Trade complaint and offer a repair service to repair damaged clothing. Although I would be hesitant to call Kuhl sustainable they are, for sure 'slow fashion'.

6. Cotopaxi

Most popular for their colourful back packs, they make their products from recycled or eco-friendly materials. They are also a certified B corporation and donate some of their profits to help fund poverty relief initiatives.

7. Tundra

Famed for their 'ethical down' sleeping bags, Tundra is the place to go if you are planning a serious outdoor adventue. Using 'Ethical Down' means that the feathers were not plucked from a live bird.

8. Vaude

One of the best places to buy sustainable walking or biking shoes, their products are all made and designed with longevity in mind. They also commit to a number of environmental initiatives around chemical use and the Fair Wear program.

10 Kathmandu

One of the largest outdoor clothing brands they have a 5 year plan to becoming zero waste and are making real headway in becoming more sustainable. They are also a certified B corportation and are now sourcing many of their materials from sustainable sources.

11. Fjallraven

A classic outdoor clothing company, Fjallraven make products designed to last well and be repaired rather than replaced. They use a lot of recycled and sustainable materials and in 2012 stopped using flurocarbons in all their products. They also have animal welfare policies that don't support live plucking of birds for their down products.

The most sustainable way to buy is always second hand on sites like  Depop where you can find loads of brilliant clothes. However, when you do need to buy something new the list above could be useful. Personally I favor second hand or Patagonia but I will look into the other brands in the future when my hiking gear needs replacing. All outdoor clothing should be made to last a lifetime and when you are up a mountain having high quality clothing is important!

I hope you all enjoyed my list put any more suggestions in the comments below!
