OK, I do get it not everyone has the time or desire to change their whole lives for the environment; so for those of you who don't like going out of your way here is the list for you. It can seem tedious sometimes when we feel like we are being nagged to change for the rain-forest or the polar bears. However, some little things we can all do can also help you save money and improve your own health at the same time! These are my top ten things that are good to do for your health and pocket as well as the environment. These are all tried and tested by me, as I would hate to be hypocritical!
1. Switching your sheets to 100% cotton - No one should want to be wrapped in plastic for 8 hours a night. This is a big one for me as I have sensitive skin, but I have actually found that since switching to 100% cotton I also get a better and comfier nights sleep.
2. Get a local veg box! For me I found trying to find 'the right veg' in the supermarket really overwhelming and expensive. Subscribing to Riverford helped me cut down on cost, time and plastic compared to organic veg in the supermarket!
3. Reduce your meat and dairy intake. Now, I don't think that the only way to help the environment is to be vegan. Eat whatever you like! But cutting down on meat and dairy can save you money and is a easy way to loose weight if done right. Cutting down slightly on our meat or making our meat go further is a good way that I have saved money at home which has also allowed me to buy higher welfare products.
4. Start a money book and write down your purchases! This massively helped me to see where I was loosing money every moths and stop buying things I didn't need! Saving money and the environment in one go!
5. Put a plastic bottle in your toilet cistern. Sounds odd but this empty bottle will fill with water reducing the amount that is used in each flush and lowering your water bill!
6. Stock up on zero waste things that help you save money in the long run. One use foil and plastics can mount up to more in the long run. Switching to zero waste cotton pads, or even carrying a reusable cup can reduce costs over a year saving money in the long fun.
7. Switch your cleaning products to ones you can make yourself. These are cheaper and less toxic and can be made from very basic ingredients! I am thinking of writing a post on this so let me know if it is something you would like to hear more about! Read about eco cleaning brands here.
8. We recently switched our energy to a 100% green energy supplier and you know what, it was actually cheaper! Moving to E.ON has saved us a fair bit of money and will continue to do so!
9. Second hand for the home. Now, I recently moved out of shared accommodation and realized just home much it costs to furnish a house. Insane amounts of money! Especially when you think about the garden as well! Shopping secondhand and finding things for your home that might already be used might seem odd but it can massively helped cut down on cost. Charity shops and even Facebook marketplace sell secondhand pots and pans sill in boxes and furniture that just needs a lick of paint. I recently bought all my draws for my office from Reviive and have tidied them up with white paint and new nobs!
10. Planning meals. Now this is something I am very bad at remembering to do, but I have got better. A third of all out food is binned in the UK and I am the worst offender here. Meal planning all my meals really helps me with shopping saving money and stopping my food just going into the bin!
